For any comments on the story.
Author's Notes: I'm starting this story fairly early, mostly so that I can be sure to actually get it done on time. I'm still not sure exactly how long it will be.
This is a fairly simple story, and most likely, what happens isn't going to come as any great shock to anybody. It's just a fun idea that plenty of people have had before me, but that I decided I wanted a crack at, so here we are.
The car chase in part four is actually one of the main reasons I wanted to write the story, though I wasn't sure, and still am not, that I could write a decent car chase. I just wanted to see a car chase done on some twisty little road out in the middle of nowhere, where it could almost become more of a game of cat and mouse... Which I doubt I conveyed as well as I meant, but oh well. It's something I've wanted to work into a story for a long time now, so when I was planning this story, I made sure to set it up so that I could use that.
Spoiler:
The main inspiration for the story, though, was the ending. I don't remember what story it was, or I'd credit it here, but most likely it was some story off the [url=http://www.ararchive.com/]AR Archive{/url], but I remember reading something where a costume made the wearer turn into a baby. Simple enough, really, and pretty much the basis of the Halloween contest they have over there every year. For some reason, though, that one made me think of the Buffy episode where that happened, and I thought it would be interesting to write a story with that basic idea, except that the person being affected by the curse is actually faking. Luckily, I happened to think of that right around Halloween, and I hadn't yet decided what my Halloween story for that year would be yet, so it worked out perfectly.
To any who don't know, Ethan Rayne is a character on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show. There are a few other references to various horror-related things, but I'll keep those a secret, at least for now. Though I will talk about references that I almost made... The girl were almost named after slashers, more specifically, slashers from movies that use holiday themes. There was going to be a little thing about them having some cute nickname for themselves for that reason, but it just seemed a little too much, plus mentioning the holidays would have made the references too obvious. Anyway, their names were going to be Buffy St. John, from April Fool's Day, and either Dorothy Wheeler from Valentine or Jamie Lloyd from Halloween 4, neither of which was actually a slasher, but were the closest I could find, given my rather narrow criteria.
Somewhat obviously, the kid with the hockey mask and the janitor in the striped sweater, from chapters three and four respectively, are references to Jason and Freddy. In addition to that, the house number of 1428 (in chapter 3) and the street name of Springwood (in chapter 4) are references to the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. The daycare name of Forest Green (chapter 3) is a slightly more obscure reference to the Friday the 13th movies, being the name of the town when they change it from Crystal Lake in one of the movies.
